Body Fat Measurement
BMI
Calculated using height and body weight. A BMI over 25 is associated with obesity-related disesases. Measurement is less accurate in overly muscular person.
Formula: BMI = (weight in kg) / (height in meters)(squared)
19-24 weight appropriate
25-29 overweight
>= 30 obese

Skinfold Calipers
Calipers are used to measure body fat utilizing specific locations on the body. The measurements are then put into a formula which gives an estimated body fat. This process is commonly used in a gym setting by a trained fitness professional.

Hydrostatic Weighing
A person expels as much air as he/she can and is then immersed into a pool of water. Computers are used to determine a persons body fat by the weight/flotation of the person in the water. This method is considered the "Golden Rule" however it tends to be more expensive than other means of measurement.

Bioelectrical Impedance
Electrodes which are connected to a computer are connected to your body. The electrodes emit electrical currents through the body which in turn measures the amount of the body's resistance to the electrical current (ohms). The computer uses this information to calculate body fat percentage and body density. This method is growing increasingly more popular.
